Paint Club: Painting as a document

What is lost or gained when we view a painting as a complex document, rather like any other kind of historical or anthropological source? In what ways does painting record, preserve or contain ideas in material form? Does this form of analysis, however finely tuned, actually ignore some other, more essential form of experience that a painting offers us, something inextricably bound up with our humanity, and with paintings physical status as an object in the world?

Join us for the second of two Paint Club events at Tate Britain. An artist and a writer discuss their relationship with particular paintings on display at Tate Britain during an interactive lunchtime event. Audience members are invited to view the chosen works and submit questions and ideas for the panel discussion in advance.

Guest panellists are the writer and critic Barry Schwabsky and the artist Clare Woods, the event is chaired by Alison Goodyear and Donal Moloney.

Paint Club was set up by staff and students of University of the Arts London as a research network, open to anyone with an interest in contemporary painting.
