Who is a Citizen? What does it mean to be a citizen? Many of the works in this display were made in turbulent times as interventions in political debates, using charged or resonant materials, and often drawing attention to those who have campaigned for citizenship and civil rights.
Discover this new wing which is concerned with the ways in which artists engage with social ideals and historical realities. Though some artists associated modernism with a utopian vision, art has also provided a mirror to contemporary society, sometimes raising awareness about urgent issues or arguing for change.
